Lau is probably (imo) one of the ugliest college campus libraries to exist. What are the best alternatives for someone who wants to study in a place that doesn't make them want to gauge their eyes out?

If you want a library that actually looks nice, try the Law library. Not exactly on campus, just on another campus. You can take the law center shuttle bus, though it doesn't run that often. Though a journey is required, it's definitely worth it if you want a campus feel but also want to escape the campus stress. Also, it's near Chinatown so you can reward your studying with a nice meal at one of the many restaurants and if you're planning to do your groceries, there's a Walmart there too. But don't forget the catch the last shuttle bus back or you'll have to take the WMATA.
The bioethics library in Healy also looks nice, but the chairs are not exactly comfortable and charging can be difficult.
for those early mornings: while HFSC (or the Healey Family Student Center) is popular for evening grind sessions, i personally think that it's even better in the morning. it's unbelievably quiet, even up until the late afternoon, & extremely picturesque as the sun streams in from the gorgeous glass windows.
for that afternoon slump: regents hall (that pretty glass building on your way to the bookstore) is so underrated. plenty of light, quiet floors, & a variety of plush seating—what more do you need??
for those late nights: as a staunch opponent of lau, i highly recommend sellinger lounge if you can deal with a little bit of background noise & chatter (nothing headphones can't solve!) it gives you the camaraderie of lau w/o the depressing vibes.
bonus! hidden gem: the graduate lounge on the bottom floor of the Car Barn is never super crowded & much nicer than any space in lau.
Sellinger is great for late nights because it's 24/7 while HFSC closes around midnight depending on the night. It also is close to Vital Vittles if you need a pick me up snack or drink while studying!
the MSB booths are an all-time favorite because it's generally quiet at night and there's outlets, big table space and it's comfy enough to nap when you get overwhelmed by the amount of work you have to do.
if you're more into libraries, the Bioethics library in Healy is super quiet and aesthetically conducive to doing work but also fills up fast
